Post-election Report: Run-off election in Guatemala
Guatemalans voted and elected Bernardo Arévalo of Movimiento Semilla as their new president. With a low profile before the first round of June 2023, the new president managed to convince society with an anti-establishment discourse mainly focused on corruption allegations of the country’s political class, thus obtaining 58.01% of the total votes. Although his contender Sandra Torres and her party UNE have not yet conceded defeat, the current president Alejandro Giammattei congratulated him and assured that they will begin the transition as soon as the Supreme Electoral Tribunal makes the results official.
